Price Scanner

Product

Interactive 22″ height touch-screen displays are to replace the present price scanners. In the first release, the new displays will have self-serve price checkers for customers. For future releases, the kiosk will features the option for customers to place online orders for out of stock items to save the sale.

Problem

The present price scanners, available in over 200 stores, were becoming outdated. In addition, many of the analog devices needed servicing. A major goal for stores was to initiate a more assertive “save the sale” approach. This was a good opportunity to upgrade store technology. One of the biggest challenges was to help customers identity the new touch-screen display as a self-serve price scanner.

Discovery

A competitive analysis was performed at the following retail chains: Walmart, Target, Toys r Us, JC Penny, and Macy’s. We performed tasks on their kiosk devices, observed customers using the devices, and studied each device’s interface design. I created cardboard prototypes that were tested with both associates and customers in stores. I also conducted heuristic evaluations to refine the designs.

Most retailers used more updated devices and technology for their price scanners. Some Walmart stores did not have prices scanners. Other Walmart stores did have them. Target had one of the most sophisticated price scan technologies and it was integrated with their mobile app. JC Penny’s kiosk allowed for customers to order products online as well as price scan product barcodes. All stores features a sign above their kiosks to help customers identify the location and the use of the price scanners.

Solution

The following issues were discovered, resolved, and designed for:

1. Signage above the kiosk will be needed to help customers identify the kiosk as a price scanner

2. Notate clear instruction of the location of the actual price scan device located below the kiosk’s display screen

3. Include customers reviews to add value to the product’s content after customer scans barcode

4. When a price is not available or the product is out of stock, provide customers with clear instructions of next steps

5. Screen will go to sleep 30 minutes after inactivity
